Observational evidence of African desert dust intensification of easterly waves

چکیده
[1] This paper presents indirect observational evidence that desert dust can modulate the amplitude of easterly waves in the Atlantic Ocean. Twenty two years of NCEP/ NCAR reanalysis and dust from a global transport model are used to characterize the evolution of enhanced easterly waves. Lag composites of analysis increments (analysis minus first–guess) of geopotential height (700–hPa) anomalies indicate larger amplitudes in the analysis than in the first-guess fields. The results indicate that the temperature structure in the lower troposphere associated with easterly waves is warmer in the analysis than in first– guess fields by about 0.25 K per day. We hypothesize that the differences in the amplitudes are due to radiative effects associated with African dust, which have been incorporated in the reanalysis by data assimilation but absent in the model first–guess.

On African easterly waves that impacted two tropical cyclones in 2004
[1] The U. S. Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) daily analysis fields are used to study the African easterly waves to show how they impacted two tropical cyclones. Danielle and Earl (2004) formed approximately at the same time in the Atlantic. A three to eight day band-pass filter is applied to the daily global analysis fields to reveal the characteristics of the Af...

Saharan mineral dust exported over the tropical North Atlantic is thought to have significant impacts on regional climate and ecosystems, but limited data exist documenting past changes in long-range dust transport. This data gap limits investigations of the role of Saharan dust in past climate change, in particular during the mid-Holocene, when climate models consistently underestimate the int...

Synoptic-scale African easterly waves (AEWs) impact weather throughout the greater Atlantic basin. Over the African continent, AEWs are instrumental in initiating and organizing precipitation in the drought-vulnerable Sahel region. AEWs also serve as the precursors to the most intense Atlantic hurricanes, and contribute to the global transport of Saharan dust. Given the relevance of AEWs for th...
متن کاملObserved 20th century desert dust variability: impact on climate and biogeochemistry
Desert dust perturbs climate by directly and indirectly interacting with incoming solar and outgoing long wave radiation, thereby changing precipitation and temperature, in addition to modifying ocean and land biogeochemistry. While we know that desert dust is sensitive to perturbations in climate and human land use, previous studies have been unable to determine whether humans were increasing ...
